Traffic was backed up near the scene of the scene of the fatal crash north of Tokoroa, after two motorcyclists were killed after they collided with a tanker.

Police are still investigating a "complex" crash scene after two motorcyclists were killed when they collided with a tanker north of Tokoroa on Friday.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 1, about a kilometre north of the town, about 2:40pm on Friday.

One of the motorcyclists who died was a 41-year-old man from Putaruru, the other a 59-year-old man from Hastings.

Police will not be releasing the names of the two dead men until family have been notified.

State Highway One was closed for more than six hours to allow for a scene examination, reopening shortly after 9:15pm on Friday.

Senior Sergeant Fane Troy of the Taupo police said the Serious Crash Unit would continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

"The scene was complex and covered a 200 metre section of the highway.

"Motorcyclists are reminded to practice caution on our roads, ride to the conditions and within your limitations," Troy said.

The police wanted to thank motorists for their patience. Traffic was initially backed up for kilometres either side of the crash spot, and diversions had to be put in place while the road was closed.

"This was a tragedy for all involved and our thoughts are with the friends and family of those affected."
